New York and Long Island were two cities which John Roebling thought of connecting through the bride.
The bridge building experts throughout the world thought that this was an impossible and impracticable idea. It just could not be done. It had never been done before.
After much discussion and persuasion he succeeded to convince his son Washington, a budding engineer, that the bridge in fact could be built.
When the project was underway for only a few months, a tragic accident on the site took the life of John Roebling and Washington was injured affecting his brain. Resultantly he was not able to walk or to talk.
The response of the people after the accident on the site was negative. They thought that the project should he stopped because the Roebling was the only one who knew how the bridge could be built.
Washington, by moving his finger, developed a code of communication with his wife. He used the method of tapping his wife’s arm with that finer, conveying his message.
Washington tapped out his instructions with his finger on his wife’s arm. In this way Washington communicated with his engineers for 13 long years.
John Roebling ignored when other engineers passed negative remarks because he thought about it all the time and he knew deep in his heart that it could be done.
Washington did not abandon the idea of building the bridge after the accident which left him totally paralyzed because he was never discouraged and still had a burning desire to complete the bridge.
The Brooklyn Bridge is called a tribute, a monument by the author because today the spectacular Brooklyn Bridge stands in all its glory as a tribute to the triumph of one man’s indomitable spirit and his determination not to be defeated by circumstances.
