افسانہ نگار مقیر کے بارے میں کہتا ہے کہ چادنی چوک سے گزرنے کے دوران اس نے ایک فقیر کو دیکھا جو لوگوں کے سامنے بڑے مؤثر انداز میں حالت زار بیان کر رہا تھا اس کا حلیہ کچھ یو ں تھا کہ اس کا قد لمبا، جسم خوب موٹا تازہ اور چہرہ کسی حد تک خوبصورت تھا مگر بدمعاشی اور بے حیائی نے صورت مسخ کر دی تھی۔
فقیر لوگوں کو مخاطب کرکے کہہ رہا تھا۔ اے مسلمان بھائیوں! خدا کے لئے مجھ بدبصیب کا حال سن لو۔میرے سات بچے ہیں۔ اس وقت میں سضت بد نصیبی اور آفت کا شکار ہوں۔ کھانے کو ترس رہا ہوں۔ بھکاری نہیں ہوں مگر اپنے وطن جانے کا طلب گار ہوں کوئی اللہ کا بندہ میری یہ خواہش پوری نہیں کرتا۔ میں مسافر ہوں۔ یہاں میرا کوئی دوست نہیں جسے مدد کے لئے پکاروں۔ اے خدا کے بندوں! میری سنو۔ میں غریب الوطن ہوں۔
فقیر کی سدا سن کر افسانہ نگار کے دل میں خیال پیداہوا کہ فقیر اکثر اْمور میں ان سے بدر جہا اچھا ہے۔ اس کی صحت قابل رشک ہے۔ اس کی وجہ یہ ہے کہ اس کاکوئی دوست نہیں۔ وہ حسرت سے کہتا ہے کہ میرا کوئی دوست نہیں۔ میں حسرت سے کہتا ہوں میرے اتنے زیادہ دوست ہیں اگر وہ سچ کہ رہا ہے کہ اس کاکوئی دوست نہیں ہے تو اسے مبارک باد دینی چاہئے۔
افسانہ نگار اپنے دوستوں سے اس لئے تنگ آگیا تھا کہ اس کے دوست وقت بے وقت اس کے پاس دندناتے ہوئے آتے اور گھنٹوں بیٹھ کر اس کا دماغ کھاتے رہتے۔ مصنف کاکام تصنیف و تانیف سے تھا لیکن دوستوں کی وقت بے وقت آمدکی وجہ سے اپنا کام کرنے سے قاصر رہتا۔
