Specie: A group of similar organism that can interbreed freely and having the potential to produce fertile offspring. E.g. cat, dog, goat etc.
Biosphere: The place of the earth where life is possible is called biosphere.
Ecosystem: The relationship of living organisms with each other and with their environment.
Population: A group of same species living to gather in same area.
Community: A group of different species living together in same area.
Food chain: A food chain comprises a sequence of organism through which energy and nutrients are taken and used up. We can shortly defined food chain A process of eating and being eaten. E.g.
i) Grass Grass hopper Rat Snake Eagle
ii) Algae Zooplankton Small fish Lava fish Whale
Interaction in Ecosystem:
Ø The organisms living together in same area interact with each other for their needs in all ecosystems.
Ø These interactions may be intra-speacific or inter specific.
Herbivore : herbivores are those animals that get its energy from eating plants and only plants.
Examples: Goat, cows, horses, Deer, monkey, sheep ets.
Carnivore: A carnivore is an animal that gets food from killing and eating other animals.
Carnivores generally eat herbivores.
Examples: Dogs, wolf, hyena, lions, bears dolphins, whales, snakes.
Omnivore: Those animals that obtain chemical energy and nutrients from plants and animals.
Example: Human, crow, pigs rats, chickens, lizards, turttes etc.
Role of Bacteria in nitrogen cycle:
Bacteria are key to nitrogen cycle. Bacteria break down the proteins contain in the bodies of plants and animals into ammonia through the process of decay. The next step is nitrification which is carried out by two nitrifying bacteria i.e nitrosomonas and nitrobacter. Nitrosomonas converts ammonia to nitrite while nitrobacter converts nitrite to nitrates. The final step is denitrificaiton, which breaks down nitrates into nitrogen and sent back to atmosphere. The step is carried out by denitrifying bacteria called anammox or ammonia oxidizing bacteria.
Effects of over population on environment:
Due to increase in human population the damaging effects on the environment also increases. Here are some of the environment problems that results from overpopulation.
(i) Loss of fresh water
(ii) Soil degradation
(iii) Deforestation
(iv) Depletion of natural resources
(v) Species extinction
(vi) Increased global warming and climate change
(vii) Elevated crime rate
(viii) Lower life expectancy in the fastest growing countries.
(ix) Increase of epidemic diseases.
(x) Increased habitat loss.
Five sources of water pollution:
The following are the major sources of water pollution.
(i) Industrial effluent
(ii) insecticides
(iii) Chemical fertillizer
(iv) Animal wastes
(v) Incomplete treatment of sewage
Parasitism:
The relationship between the parasite and its host is called parasitism. Parasite always get benefit from the host and causes harm to him.
Example: Cuscuta plant can not produce food , but it grows on the surface of big plant (hosts)and causes harm to the host plant. Other examples are tapeworm, fleas, lice etc.
Mutualism:
In this type of relationship both the partners are mutually benefitted and non of them is harmed.
Example: the root of the leguminous plants (pea, beans etc) hove small nodules, which contain fixing bacteria. These bacteria get food from plant and in return convert the atmospheric nitrogen into fixation and nitrification.
Nitrogen fixation:-
Nitrogen fixation is the process where N2 is converted to ammonium with the help of certain bacteria. Nitrogen fixing bacteria often form symbiotic relationships with legume (e.g peas, beans).
Nitriftication:
Some of the ammonium produced by decomposition is converted to nitrate via a process called nitrification. Nitrification accomplished by two groups of bacteria . One group is bacteria Nitrification converts ammonia into nitrites and second group of bacteria Nitrobacter converts nitrites in nitrates (Fertilizer).
