KPK 9th Class Physics Chapter 7 Properties of Matter Short Questions Answers

If you climbed a mountain carrying a mercury barometer, would the level of the mercury column in the glass tube of the barometer increase or decrease as you climb the mountain? Explain.

Atmospheric pressure decreases with the increase of height.
When we climbe a mountain carrying a mercury barometer atmospheric pressure becomes lower and lower atmospheric pressure would place less force on the mercury column in the glass tube. Thus mercury column in the glass tube of the barometer decreases as wee climbe the mountain.

Walnuts can be broken in the hand by squeezing two together but not one way?

When we equeeze two walnuts together in hands, the contact area decrease due to which the pressure increases. As a result the walnuts can be broken easily. But incase of single walnut it is difficult to break by squeezing in hand.

Why is the cutting edge of the knife made very thin?

We know that:
P = F/A
Pressure is inversely proportional to the area. That is smaller the are, greater will be the pressure.
That is why the cutting edge of the knife is made very thin because smaller area produces maximum pressure.
By doing so we can cut the various objects with knife very easily.

Why water tanks are constructed at the highest level in our houses?

Water flows from higher potential to lower potential. To maintain the flow rate at high speed tanks are constructed at highest level.
Greater the height from which water fall, greater will be its velocity.
Therefore water tanks are constructed at the highest level on our houses.

Why a small needle sinks in water and huge ships travel easily in water without sinking?

Small needle sinks in water because the density of iron needle is greater than the density of water due to smaller volume of needle. Density is inversely proportional to the volume.
Density = mass/volume
Volume of huge ship is very large therefore its density is small than the density of water displaced. Thus according to the law of floating the small iron needle sink in water and huge ship float on the surface of water.

Explain how and why camels have adapted to allow them to walk more easily in desert conditions?

Camels have fast storage in their hump so they so not get hungry, they are also native to the desert and its climate so obviously it will be easy for them to walk in such hot and humid conditions. Camels feet have large surface area, therefore they exert small pressure. As a result of less pressure they can walk in deserts easily.

You would have probably experience your ears ‘popping’ while driving in the mountains. Why ears ‘pop’?

When we are driving in the air pressure because low. Due to mountain, the air pressure becomes low due to while the air pressure inside our ear is higher. Trapped by lower altitude due to the difference of air pressure the ear drum being stressed so it pushes out into our throat whit bubble popping sound.

If you filled an airtight balloon at the top of a mountain, would the balloon expand or contract as you descend the mountain? Explain.

When we descend the air tight balloon at the top of a mountain, the balloon will contract its reason is that the atmospheric pressure increases gradually with the decrease of height. Atmospheric pressure at the top of mountain is less than that at the sea level when we descend the balloon the atmospheric pressure increases and pressure inside the balloon also increase, this pressure will press the balloon and moving it contract.

A rowboat is floating in a swimming pool when the anchor is dropped over the side. When the anchor is dropped, will the water level in the swimming pool increase, decrease, or remain the same? Explain.

When the anchor is in the boat its whole weight is supported and the amount of water, displaced produces up trust which balance the weight.
When the anchor is dropped into the water it sinks and displaced area of water remains equal to the volume of anchor. The water displaced by weight is more than water displaced by volume. So, when the anchor is dropped into the water, the level of water in the pool decreases.

Which material is more elastic, steel or rubber and why?

A body on which a greater force is applied to deform is more elastic:
Elasticily = stress/strain
Elasticity is directly proportional to stress and inversely proportional to strain (Deform). Steel required more force to deforming than rubber. That’s why steel is more elastic than rubber.
