KPK 9th Class Biology Chapter 5 Cell Cycle Short Questions Answers
Define cell cycle and in how many phases it is divided?
Cell cycle: The time from the beginning of one cell division to the beginning of another cell division is called cell cycle. The cell cycle is the series of events in a eukaryotic cell which results its replication. A single celled fertilized egg develops into a mature organism by cell cycle. The cell cycle comprises of two period.
Interphase: The most important event of interphase is the duplication of DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid).
Division: During this phase, the cell splits into two daughter cells.
In which types of cells, meiosis take place and why it is important?
Meiosis take place in germ cells or gametes. It is important because crossing over occur in meiosis which results in genetic variation in daughter cells.
How does normal mitosis ensure normal life?
Mitosis ensures the exact and equal transmission of genetic information to daughter cells hence, mitosis ensure normal life.
Give at least four differences between mitosis and meiosis.
Mitosis | Meiosis |
It occurs in somatic cells. | It occurs in germ cells (gametes). |
It involves only single cell division. | It involves two consecutive cell divisions. |
It produces two daughter cells. | It produces four daughter cells |
The daughter cells have the diploid (2n) number of chromosome as the parent cell. | The daughter cells have haploid (n) number of chromosomes as the parent cell. |
What is chiasma and what is its role in crossing over?
Chiasma: The point at which two non-sister chromatids of a homologous chromosome exchange their segment is called chiasma. Exchange of segments leads to crossing over, so it produces genetic variation.
